Winterhaven is a small city near the mountain ranges of the northeastern frontier. In times past, a group of monks had established a monastery at the foothold of the mountains in a remote location. Over the course of centuries, the monastery grew and the monks, who were dedicated to the preservation of knowledge above all else, acquired a massive library of tomes and scrolls. This library grew to become one of the largest repositories of knowledge in all the frontier lands, and over time, people of many backgrounds came to the region to benefit from the knowledge contained within. Those who came soon found that in addition to the monastery the area contained fertile soil and plentiful game and as humans are inclined to do they settled the area. Small farms quickly gave birth to a small town and with the birth of that small town came a need for the common defense. A king long dead, and a kingdom long forgotten established a duchy in these lands and built a keep so that the people would have a means of protection. As the town was situated at the crossroads of two trade routes and a large river the small town gradually grew and grew until it became a city. The city exists now as a free city-state ruled by Lord Aldon Corval, who’s ancestors have held the throne in these lands for generations. The merchant families form a Combine which functions as a city council overseeing the day to day affairs of the city while Lord Aldon sees to the Guard, who protect and defend the City and surrounding countryside, as well as to judicial matters.
